What you can see and do

Near Dhaka Medical College, the Central Shaheed Minar commemorates those killed in the 1952 Language Movement. Its red disc and white columns have become symbols of Bengali language and identity. Large crowds bring flowers at dawn on 21 February; on other days visitors can see the memorial in a quieter setting.

How to get there

The memorial is beside Dhaka Medical College and the University of Dhaka. Walk or take a rickshaw from Shahbag or Palashi; traffic and access arrangements change on 21 February.

Safety notes

Do not climb on old walls or ruins or write on them; check the opening hours and closing days first.
