What you can see and do

This vihara at Paharpur is the Somapura Mahavihara of history, now on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The Pala king Dharmapala founded it here in Badalgachhi upazila in the 8th century. Lines of monks' cells edge a vast four-sided courtyard, and the main shrine at its centre is laid out as a cross. Take your time over the walls' terracotta plaques and the museum beside the site.

How to get there

About 32 km north of Naogaon town via Badalgachhi; a little over an hour by bus or CNG auto-rickshaw.

Safety notes

Do not climb on old walls or ruins or write on them; check the opening hours and closing days first.
