What you can see and do

Bangladesh has no bigger man-made lake than Kaptai. It came into being when the Karnaphuli river was dammed for hydropower. That was at the start of the 1960s. A boat trip across the blue water between green hills takes in the hanging bridge, the Chakma Raja's area, hill villages and island-like hillocks. After the monsoon, when the water has risen, the lake is at its fullest and finest.

How to get there

Engine boats are found at Reserve Bazar and Tabalchhari in Rangamati town. The Parjatan ghat has them too. Hire by the hour or day.

Safety notes

Wear a life jacket on a boat; stay off the river when a storm is likely.
