Gandhi Ashram, Joyag

Noakhali · History and heritage

What you can see and do

The ashram goes back to Mahatma Gandhi's visit to Joyag. Following the riots of 1946 he was then going on foot from one Noakhali village to the next to bring back peace. The ashram's estate was the gift of Barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghosh. The Gandhi Memorial Museum here keeps spinning wheels and items Gandhi used. It has photographs of that tour as well.

How to get there

Take a bus or CNG from Maijdee. Get down at Sonaimuri and go on by auto-rickshaw to the ashram beside Joyag bazar; about an hour in all.

Safety notes

Do not climb on old walls or ruins or write on them; check the opening hours and closing days first.
