What you can see and do

The barrage spans the Teesta in Hatibandha upazila, at a place called Doani. The irrigation scheme run from it is bigger than any other in Bangladesh. The long row of sluice gates, the canals on either side and the tree-lined canal roads make it a popular outing. Dalia in Nilphamari lies just across, and the river looks best in afternoon light.

How to get there

About 60 km north-west of Lalmonirhat town; take a bus to Barakhata in Hatibandha, then an auto-rickshaw to Doani.

Safety notes

Wear a life jacket on a boat; stay off the river when a storm is likely.
